Issues around a traveller encampment at Pomparles Bridge, between Glastonbury and Street which has caused division in the community will "take some time" to resolve, according to Mendip District Council's Leader.

Measures introduced to stop vehicles parking on the land using boulders were largely unsuccessful. Efforts are now being made to secure alternative land, both public and private, to provide an alternative site.

Cllr Ros Wyke, council leader said the council was working towards finding a resolution to the issue, but appreciated that their actions weren't always visible. Cllr Wyke said: "In taking stock of the whole picture across Glastonbury, it's inevitable that solutions will take some time to come to fruition. We recognise and understand that there are some growing frustrations about areas of Glastonbury, in particular Pomparles Bridge. We also appreciate that this issue has been ongoing for some time and it can be frustrating when actions are not visible, however I want to reassure all communities that the council has been taking steps in moving towards a resolution and remain very committed to managing and resolving the issue. "

Earlier this year Mendip District Council's Cabinet, outlined its ambition to develop and deliver solutions that ensure all sections of the local community can live harmoniously and feel welcome.

At the time Cabinet felt that there was a need for a holistic view of the needs of the community in and around Glastonbury, in reaction to this Cllr Wyke set up the Glastonbury Living Spaces panel.

The panel was made up of the following councillors; Cllr Steve Henderson, Cllr Eric Hobbs, Cllr Nick Cottle, Cllr Peter Goater, Cllr Heather Shearer and Cllr Liz Leyshon together with Cllr Ros Wyke. The council says the panel remains: "committed to this approach and is actively seeking long term solutions." Part of the effort involves looking at public and private land assets and working with partners to deliver accommodation solutions.

Cllr Wyke added that the council would take action to combat antisocial behaviour wherever it occurred.

She said: "It's important that we take into account the interests and wellbeing of all communities in Mendip, however, we are clear that where there is unacceptable and antisocial behaviour, the council will use an appropriate course of action. We will also continue to engage and work with Somerset County Council and Glastonbury Town Council to provide solutions for all parties involved."
