Glastonbury community campaigns for new pharmacy amid appeal
Glastonbury residents are rallying for a new pharmacy in town as an appeal against the decision to introduce one is under review.
The outcome is expected to be heard in June, with a decision published in early August.
The campaign has gained momentum, with local businesses displaying "Glastonbury needs a pharmacy" signs in their shop windows. Additionally, an online petition has been launched to urge NHS Resolution to recognise the strength of local feeling on this matter.
The closures of Tesco and Boots pharmacies within three months of each other last year left the town with just one pharmacy on Feversham Lane.
The South West Pharmacy Committee approved an application for a new establishment in Glastonbury, which was celebrated this as a "key milestone."
In its report to NHS Somerset, the South West Pharmaceutical Services Regulatory Committee stated that it had approved the new community pharmacy application, believing it would "confer a significant benefit to the local population by way of access to, or choice of, pharmaceutical services."
Despite this approval, another pharmacy has lodged an appeal against the decision which is now being handled by NHS Resolution.
Work is currently under way on the former Four Seasons shop in Glastonbury High Street, which is expected to be the home of the new pharmacy.
