A woman had to be taken to hospital after her car crashed into a tree near Glastonbury yesterday afternoon (July 19).
Just after 4pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control mobilised fire engines to Watchwell Drove - in between Glastonbury, Street and Butleigh - at the request of Avon and Somerset Police to reports of a single vehicle road traffic collision.
On arrival crews confirmed a woman still trapped within a single vehicle. Crew administered first aid and stabilised the vehicle.
Watchwell Drove was closed for a couple of hours while the emergency services attended the scene.
The car, which had left the carriageway and collided with a tree, caused the female casualty to be severely trapped.
Crews, comprising of three fire appliances from Glastonbury, Street and Somerton, together with a heavy rescue vehicle from Glastonbury, worked alongside ambulance paramedics to initially stabilise the vehicle, before firstly removing one side of the vehicle for paramedics to provide medical assistance, and then the roof to allow for extrication of the patient.
This was achieved using three sets of hydraulic cutting equipment and stabilisation equipment.
Once released, the casualty was conveyed to hospital via road ambulance. The vehicle and scene were made safe before duty of care was left with the police.
