A pub in West Pennard that reopened in November will be offering takeaway Sunday roasts during the Tier 4 restrictions.

As of today (December 31), the Glastonbury area is under the Tier 4: Stay at Home rules, to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

However, The Lion at West Pennard will be offering roast dinners to takeaway so people can still treat themselves on Sundays.

Each week the pub will offer at least one meat roast and a vegetarian/vegan meal. They can also ensure an order is gluten free if you make them aware beforehand.

To help manage numbers, the pub asks people to place their order by noon each Saturday for collection the following day. Cash or card accepted upon collection.

This week's roasts, which are priced at £10 per roast, are beef, chicken or vegan nut roast. All the roasts include roast potatoes, honey-roasted carrots, broccoli, sweet potato and swede mash, braised red cabbage, sweet potato crisps, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and horseradish sauce.

Desserts are £2.50 each and are gluten-free and vegan apple and berry crumble (ready for you to bake at home) or gluten-free brownies.

The newly renamed The Lion is now owned and run by 32-year-old Barrie Wilson, a Scotsman from Troon in Ayrshire, who has been living in Shepton Mallet for the last three years with his Somerset-born fiancé Christian Lockyer.

Barrie brings more than 15 years' experience in the hospitality industry, including at some of Somerset's top pubs and hotels, as well as venues in London.

Alongside his hobby of interior design, Barrie hopes to keep developing the pub's look into the future to attract both locals and those from afar who want a traditional British stay in the heart of Somerset, when restrictions allow.

The Grade II listed building will feature a new rear entrance from the large car park which opens into a new bar area with tall, exposed stone walls, natural lighting and a renovated restaurant area.

In the spring, The Lion also hopes to open three new luxury hotel rooms to build on the nine it currently has available.

Barrie said: "This is such an exciting project for me.

"I've been in the hospitality sector for 15 years and have always dreamt of having my own place, and where better than a stunning country pub overlooking Glastonbury Tor in the heart of Somerset, a county I've completely fallen in love with?

"It's been exciting working with a great team to come up with the plans and ideas for how the new Lion should look.

"I truly want The Lion to not only be a great community village pub for West Pennard and the surrounding area, but also a destination spot for visitors to stop off for food, drink and a homely place to stay.

"We have lots planned and we can't wait to get the new bar and restaurant open. We're also looking forward to what next year has in store in terms of events and how other areas of the site can be developed more to make this a must-go destination."
