By Laura Linham 6th Mar 2026
If you've been thinking about a career change — or simply wondering what else is out there locally — the Nub News jobs board has a fresh batch of roles this week.
Across Glastonbury, Street and the surrounding towns, the latest listings range from shop-floor management to engineering roles that will take you travelling across the country.
There's everything from retail management in Street to engineering positions based around Glastonbury, plus a few hands-on roles just down the road in Shepton and Wells if your commute is flexible.
Factory floors and production lines
If you prefer a job where the day ends when the shift does — rather than when someone finally replies to your email — these might be worth a look.
Chocolate lovers may already know that a large chunk of the nation's sweets quietly come out of Castle Cary, and Mars are currently looking for a Process Operator – Castle Cary. The permanent role pays £29,400–£31,200 plus bonus and benefits, working 37 hours a week on rotating shifts. Expect hands-on machinery work, handling raw ingredients and keeping production running smoothly — all while surrounded by some of the country's most recognisable brands.
Meanwhile, over in Ditcheat, Thrive Group are recruiting a Production Operative – Ditcheat. The role pays £18.66 an hour and starts as a temporary position with a view to becoming permanent. Duties include bagging and sealing cheese, checking quality and operating production equipment — essentially the stage before Somerset's dairy exports reach supermarket shelves.
If weekends suit you better than weekday shifts, there's also a Production Operative – Weekend Shift – Wells paying £15.90 an hour. The work focuses on preparing ready meals, weighing ingredients and keeping hygiene standards high — fast-paced work but ideal if you want your weekdays free.
Engineering and technical roles
For those whose idea of a good day's work involves fixing things rather than forwarding emails.
A Mechanical Fitter – Nights – Shepton Mallet role is offering £52,000 a year plus bonuses and enhanced overtime. The Monday–Friday night shift involves maintaining and repairing industrial machinery, welding and fabrication work, and dealing with breakdowns before they become very expensive problems.
There's also a Field Service Engineer – Glastonbury area role paying £35,000–£50,000 plus overtime, involving nationwide travel installing and servicing recycling and materials-handling equipment. Expect a company van, plenty of autonomy and a lot of time explaining machinery faults to people standing next to conveyor belts.
For construction specialists, a Site Engineer – Glastonbury is also being recruited for a civil engineering project, offering around £340 a day on contract. The role involves setting out groundworks, drainage and infrastructure — the behind-the-scenes work that keeps building projects actually progressing.
Office, retail and professional roles
If steel-toe boots aren't really your thing, there are a few desk-based options this week too.
Logistics never sleeps around Shepton Mallet's distribution hubs, and a Transport Operator – Shepton Mallet is currently being recruited with a salary of around £30,000 a year. The role centres on coordinating transport operations and keeping deliveries running to schedule — which in logistics terms is often easier said than done.
Over in Street, Radley are looking for a Retail Assistant Manager – Street paying £13.71 an hour. The role involves supporting the shop team, helping manage the store and selling the brand's famously British handbags.
For those further along their career ladder, a Client Manager – Wells role with a local accountancy practice offers £38,000–£50,000 depending on experience. The position involves managing a portfolio of clients, overseeing tax and accounts work and guiding the wider team — ideal for someone with ACA, ACCA or CTA qualifications looking to settle into a Somerset practice.
Education and legal roles
A couple of more specialised roles are also currently hiring locally.
Strode College in Street is recruiting an Assistant Principal – Student Experience, a senior leadership role focused on overseeing the overall student experience and helping shape the college's future direction. The position sits within the wider University Centre Somerset College Group and involves strategic leadership as well as day-to-day operational oversight.
Meanwhile, legal professionals looking for their next step may want to consider a Residential Property Lawyer role with a respected Somerset firm offering salaries up to £55,000 and hybrid working. The job focuses on handling complex residential conveyancing matters including sales, purchases, remortgages and leasehold work.
Something a little different
Finally, if you fancy being your own boss rather than reporting to one, Hillarys are recruiting Blinds and Curtains Installers – Wells area with earnings advertised up to £50,000. It's a self-employed role installing window furnishings in customers' homes, offering flexible hours and local work — though you may end up knowing more about people's living rooms than you ever planned.
Of course, this is only a snapshot of what's currently available locally. You can browse many more roles on the Nub News jobs boards for Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury, with new listings added regularly.
Because even if you're not actively job hunting, there's always something strangely satisfying about seeing what else is out there.
