DIY chain B&Q has confirmed its commitment to Glastonbury after South Somerset District Council bought the site for £4.4 million.

As reported last week (see red button below), the council has purchased the site, which has been tenanted by B&Q since its construction and has an unexpired lease term of seven years, as part of its commercial strategy.

Speaking to Glastonbury Nub News, a B&Q spokesperson said: "We are looking forward to working with the new landlords and are committed to serving customers in the Glastonbury area."

As well as buying the store because it has performed well in a difficult climate and it has a lack of competitors locally, the council has bought the site off the Wirral Park Roundabout with an eye on the future development of part of the car park.

Planning permission was granted in 2015 which included "construction of drive-thru restaurant/cafe (198sqm at ground floor with 18sqm plant mezzanine) within car park", but this expired in 2018.

A spokesperson for the council said that, while the council was looking at options for the car park, it was too early to release any details of any plans.
