Young readers in Street and Glastonbury are invited to embrace their inner creators this summer with the 'Marvellous Makers' Summer Reading Challenge hosted by Somerset Libraries.
The summer holidays provide the perfect opportunity for children aged 4-11 to engage with their local library. This year’s Challenge, developed in partnership with Create, a prominent arts charity, aims to ignite children's imaginations through reading and artistic expression.
Participants will enjoy a variety of free activities, ranging from arts and crafts to music and dance, encouraging them to explore new books and stories. The theme of 'Marvellous Makers' is brought to life by the distinctive artwork of renowned illustrator Natelle Quek. By participating, children can enhance their creative thinking by reading and earning rewards throughout the summer.
Visit your local Somerset Library to take part in all the exciting family activities available.
The Challenge is designed to combat the 'summer dip'—a period over the school holidays when children can experience a decline in learning retention. Supported by libraries, the Challenge offers a fun and no-cost way to keep young minds engaged.
"The Summer Reading Challenge is an excellent free resource for entertaining children during the summer break, igniting their creativity and love for stories," said Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Executive Lead for Communities, Housing, and Culture. "We are eager to see Somerset's children unleash their creative potential and storytelling skills as they aim to read six books from their local library. We look forward to welcoming more families to our libraries, where they can join the Challenge at no cost."
