Yeovil District Hospital has confirmed there is still no date for reopening its maternity unit, three months after services were suspended.

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and maternity ward were closed on 19 May due to "safety, quality and fragility" concerns in paediatric services.

Since then, 212 babies who would have been born at Yeovil have been delivered elsewhere — 90 at Musgrove Park in Taunton, 96 at Dorset County, five at Bath's RUH, five at other hospitals and 16 at home.

In its three-month review, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust said it is working with Dorset County Hospital and Somerset Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership to support families. Recruitment is under way, with new paediatric doctors due to start in September.

The Trust said it is "confident we can build a stronger, more sustainable service for babies, children and young people in Somerset" but has given no timeline for reopening.

At the end of June, the Care Quality Commission rated paediatric services at Yeovil as "inadequate".

Yeovil MP Adam Dance said: "The latest statement will be disappointing for many families… parents and midwives need much greater transparency and reassurance. I will continue to press the Trust and ministers for clear answers, a timeline for reopening, and a firm commitment to maternity care in Yeovil."
