West Pennard’s 500-year-old pub to reopen under Redan team

A 500-year-old pub near Glastonbury is due to reopen under new ownership this week, as the team behind The Redan Inn adds The Lion at West Pennard to its business.
James and Simon, who took over The Redan in Chilcompton just over two years ago, say the new pub will open on Thursday, 5 November. Head chef Rhys Brooks will oversee the kitchens at both venues, while the owners will continue working at The Redan.
The Lion is a Grade II listed building. Historic England dates it to the 15th or early 16th century, when it was built as a house before becoming an inn. It was formerly known as the Red Lion.
The Redan is a country pub and guest house at Fry's Well, near Radstock, with seven rooms and a restaurant. Its menus focus on modern British pub food, using seasonal produce and local ingredients where possible, alongside Sunday roasts and pizzas from its outdoor eatery, The Carriage.
Since taking over The Redan, James and Simon have expanded its outdoor offer with a garden and pizza carriage. The new space was launched in May 2025 with a community event attended by around 300 people, and the pub has also been developing a kitchen garden to grow produce for its menus.
The owners say The Redan has more than doubled in size during their two years there. They describe The Lion as the next step for the business and say they want to bring the historic pub back into the heart of the West Pennard community.
