Walton Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School has been rated 'Good' in its latest Ofsted inspection, echoing its commitment to providing quality education and fostering a positive school environment.
The Ofsted report, dated 18 and 19 October 2023, highlights the school's nurturing atmosphere, stating, "Pupils are proud of their school. They show care and consideration for one another." The report goes on to describe the supportive relationships between students, noting, "For example, older pupils act as 'buddies' for younger pupils."
The school's focus on student well-being is evident. The report emphasises this, saying "The school focuses on pupils' well-being."
The report details how Walton Primary School integrates well-being into its culture through events like a school fair, highlighting this aspect as a central part of school life.
Walton's commitment to providing a broad and enriching educational experience is also noted in the report: "The school plans a variety of trips, school events and clubs." This includes various activities from chess and cookery to sports, ensuring a holistic approach to education.
In academics, the school's curriculum receives commendation for its logical structure, particularly in mathematics. However, the report suggests areas for improvement, noting, "In a few parts of the curriculum, the school has not sequenced some strands of the learning." Specifically, it identifies a need for more careful planning in writing and early years vocabulary development.
The school's approach to reading and support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is highly praised. "Teachers are well trained to make sure pupils have the exact support they need to keep up with their peers," the report states, highlighting the school's commitment to inclusive education.
Pupil behaviour and attitude at Walton are described positively in the report: "Pupils are calm and orderly, both in the classroom and out." This reflects the school's effective strategies in managing and supporting student behaviour and learning attitudes.
Looking ahead, the report advises the school to refine certain areas of its curriculum for enhanced coherence and effectiveness. It suggests, "The school needs to ensure it plans and sequences the essential knowledge pupils will learn and when that will happen."
