A vacant garage site on Walton's A39 Main Street is set for a new lease of life as a 24-hour self-storage centre after plans were given the go-ahead by Somerset Council.
The building — last used by Blackdown Motors before closing in December 2024 — will be converted into secure storage units for personal and business use. No external alterations are planned, and access will be available around the clock with on-site parking retained at the front.
The developer says the Walton site will serve households and firms across the Street, Glastonbury and Wells area. The proposal is expected to create nine full-time jobs and increase footfall to nearby businesses.
Planning officers backed the scheme under policies promoting business growth and reuse of brownfield land. The site lies within Walton's designated development boundary and had been used for car sales and servicing for decades.
The applicant said the storage use will bring a quieter, cleaner presence to the site — which had previously seen noisy MOTs, valeting and power-tool use. The council accepted that the change would reduce disturbance for neighbouring residents and improve the visual appearance of the streetscene.
The A39 site lies on a major route connecting mid-Somerset with Bridgwater, Taunton and the M5. It is also served by regular buses to Street, Glastonbury and Wells.
