Broadband provider Truespeed has been handed £34,000 in fines and charges for roadworks offences - including some in Street.

The company faced prosecution from Somerset Council for failing to ensure pedestrian safety during its works, breaching the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.

The offences, which occurred on 25 July 2023, involved inadequate traffic management and the failure to safeguard areas where roads were broken and excavated. In Street, the breaches occurred on Mildred Road and Hempitts Road, while in Frome, similar offences took place on Beaconsfield Way, Poplar Close, and Grange Road.

Taunton Magistrates Court heard the case last month, where Truespeed pleaded guilty to five charges under S65 of the NRSWA 1991.

The court recognised the company's early guilty plea and efforts to rectify the breaches but also noted Truespeed's previous convictions under the same act dating back to 2021.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council's Lead Member for Transport and Digital said: "We take these sorts of offences very seriously, carrying out works without proper measures is simply unacceptable. We will take action if companies are in breach of their duties.

"Our message to the public is please report issues to Somerset Council if you see them – help us to make sure companies work in a safe and considerate manner."

The court's sentence included fines of £28,000, costs amounting to £4,277, and a victim surcharge of £2,000.
