The newly refurbished Tor Sports and Leisure facility in Glastonbury is reopening to the public today (3 February) following a £2.2 million transformation.

The project is the first to be completed under the Glastonbury Town Deal and has delivered a modernised community sports and leisure hub. The refurbishment includes a new state-of-the-art gym, upgraded event and meeting spaces, improved changing facilities, and a newly refurbished bar.

Somerset Council led the project, working with Pick Everard as project manager and quantity surveyor, alongside Rigg Construction (Southern) Ltd. Now completed, the site has been handed back to Fusion Lifestyle, which will manage the facility.

Councillor Federica Smith Roberts, Somerset Council's lead member for communities, said: "The former Tor Sports and Leisure site has long needed enhancement, and the state of the building had previously hindered its potential. Thanks to the investment secured from the Glastonbury Town Deal, it's revitalised, ensuring a secure future for local sports clubs and leisure users alike."

Sustainability was a key focus of the project, with new energy-efficient measures installed, including additional roof insulation. Locally sourced contractors were used where possible, and materials from the old building were reused. The site will also benefit from another Town Deal project later this year when Glastonbury Clean Energy installs rooftop solar panels to generate clean power.

Lynne Sedgmore, chair of the Glastonbury Town Deal Board, said: "We are extremely proud to see the first Glastonbury Town Deal project completed and look forward to the positive impacts it will have on our community. This is a time to celebrate and create a brighter future for the town."

Fusion Lifestyle CEO Anthony Cawley added: "The grand reopening of the leisure centre in Tor marks an exciting chapter for both Fusion and the Glastonbury community. This project is a fantastic addition to the town, and it's bound to become a beloved space for locals and visitors alike."

A grand open day is planned for Saturday 1 March, with details to be announced soon.

Glastonbury secured £23.6 million in Towns Fund grant funding in September 2022 to support projects aimed at boosting the local economy, improving infrastructure, and enhancing facilities.
