Somerset Libraries are launching a new community initiative aimed at tackling ‘Period Poverty’ to mark National Libraries Week (8th October 2018) which this year celebrates health and wellbeing.

‘The Tricky Period’ will run on a trial basis and offer free sanitary products to young women in the County who would not otherwise be able to afford them.

Anyone who would like to donate unopened sanitary products can do so at any time at their nearest library.  All products donated will then be redistributed to the five libraries running the pilot service which are Bridgwater, Chard, Glastonbury, Taunton and Yeovil. They will give out the products on a no-questions-asked basis from 12th November.

David Hall, Somerset County Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Planning and Community Infrastructure said about the service:

"The issue of 'period poverty' affects 1 in 7 girls in the UK, who struggle to be able to afford sanitary products. It's wonderful to see our libraries serving their local community by helping to provide a much-needed service to vulnerable women in Somerset and I would like to encourage people to support this project by donating supplies.”

If you would like to donate any sanitary products, please drop them off at your nearest library.

Libraries Week takes place this year between the 8–13 October to celebrate the nation's library services. This year, with a focus on wellbeing, libraries across the country will showcase how they bring communities together, combat loneliness, provide a space for reading and creativity and support people with their mental health.
