Street Unity Club to close after more than 100 years
By Laura Linham 15th Jun 2026
A members' club which has been part of Street life for more than a century is to close permanently.
Street Unity Club, based on Leigh Road, will shut on 1 July 2026 after 104 years. Members have been told the club is no longer financially viable following rising costs, falling income and fewer bookings.
The closure was confirmed in a letter from Unity Club Street Ltd dated 12 June. It said rising energy and brewery costs, increasing expenses and a continued decline in revenue had made it "increasingly difficult" to keep the club open.
The letter, signed by acting chairperson Richard Stevenson, said the past two years had been particularly challenging. It said the club had also been affected by "a constant turnover of Committee members".
The club said it had explored every possible option, including trying to secure a loan. However, it said this had not been enough to fund the changes needed to improve the club and increase revenue.
In the letter, the club said: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the closure of our Club."
It added that the ongoing fall in revenue had led to the "heart-wrenching decision" to close permanently.
Street Unity Club was formed in October 1922 as a working men's club. According to the club's own published history, it was originally set up as a place where men could meet after work and have a drink.
The early rules were very different from the club known by later generations. Women were not allowed on the premises and men were expected to wear a collar and tie to enter.
The club later became a long-running social venue for the town, with facilities including a function hall, skittle alley, pool room, snooker room, darts facilities and a conference room. Over the years it has hosted members' activities, private events and wider community use.
Members have been told the club hopes to stay open until 1 July and has asked for support during its final weeks. The letter says assets from the club will be made available to buy, with a list to be posted on the notice board once permitted by the insolvency company.
Anyone wishing to buy an item will be asked to submit a request with a bid price. The letter says all bids will be considered, with members to be informed of the outcome by the insolvency practitioner.
The club has encouraged members and friends to visit before it closes. It said it wants people to help mark its history before the doors shut for the final time.
