A deliberate fire involving two caravans in Glastonbury prompted a major emergency response on Saturday night. Fire crews were called to Wirral Park Road at 8.07pm on Saturday, 13 June, after multiple reports of a caravan on fire near Tesco.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed the blaze was started deliberately. No casualties were reported, and the incident was later left with store staff and police once the scene had been made safe.

Two fire engines from Glastonbury and Street were first sent to the incident. A third engine from Wells was requested while crews were still on the way, after firefighters saw a large plume of smoke.

Crews arrived within minutes and immediately asked for two more fire engines from Somerton and Shepton Mallet. An aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater was also sent after crews confirmed two caravans were on fire close to the supermarket, with a high risk of the fire spreading.

The supermarket had been evacuated by staff before firefighters brought the blaze under control. The fire service said crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading extensively to the store.

The incident was brought under control at 10.40pm and the fire was fully extinguished. Firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, main jets, a covering jet assisted by the aerial ladder platform, ladders and fogging spikes.

Thermal imaging cameras were used to check for fire spread and hotspots before crews left the scene. Positive pressure ventilation fans were also used to clear smoke from the store.

Tesco later said its Glastonbury store had now reopened.
