Glastonbury police appeal after caravans destroyed in fire
By Laura Linham 15th Jun 2026
An investigation has been launched after two caravans were severely damaged in a fire in Glastonbury.
Avon and Somerset Police were called to Beckery New Road shortly before 8.15pm on Saturday, 13 June, along with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. Two caravans were badly damaged in the blaze, while a third nearby was also affected.
A wall to a neighbouring business premises also sustained heat damage. Police said nobody was injured.
The fire happened near Tesco, which was evacuated by staff while emergency crews dealt with the incident. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service previously confirmed the fire was started deliberately.
Police are treating the incident as suspicious while fire investigation work continues. Officers from the Glastonbury neighbourhood policing team will be carrying out patrols over the coming days and making enquiries in the area.
Fire crews were first called at 8.07pm after multiple reports of a caravan on fire near the supermarket. Two appliances from Glastonbury and Street were initially sent to the scene.
A third appliance from Wells was requested while crews were still on the way after firefighters saw a large plume of smoke. Once at the scene, crews asked for two more fire engines from Somerton and Shepton Mallet.
An aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater was also sent after firefighters confirmed two caravans were on fire close to the supermarket, with a high risk of the blaze spreading. The fire service said crews were able to stop the fire spreading extensively to the store.
The incident was brought under control at 10.40pm and the fire was fully extinguished. Firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, main jets, a covering jet assisted by the aerial ladder platform, ladders and fogging spikes.
Thermal imaging cameras were used to check for fire spread and hotspots before crews left the scene. Positive pressure ventilation fans were also used to clear smoke from the store, which later reopened.
Sergeant Simon Lancey, of the Glastonbury neighbourhood policing team, said: "We are treating the incident as suspicious at this time, pending the outcome of ongoing fire investigation work.
"The fire caused a significant amount of damage but, fortunately, nobody was injured. If this fire was started deliberately, then that was an incredibly dangerous act.
"Neighbourhood officers will be carrying out patrols over the coming days to help those people affected and conducting enquiries in the area to support the investigation.
"We would please ask any witnesses, or people with CCTV, dashcam or other footage, to come forward.."
Anyone who saw what happened, or who has CCTV, dashcam or other footage from the Beckery New Road area, is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police. People calling 101 should quote reference number 5226163150.
Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through its anonymous online form. No personal details are taken, information cannot be traced or recorded, and people who contact Crimestoppers do not have to go to court or speak to police.
