Strode Theatre is turning producer this autumn, with an in-house staging of Samuel Beckett's famously strange Waiting for Godot raising money for the Street venue itself.

The production will run in The Studio from Wednesday, 28 October to Saturday, 31 October, bringing Beckett's bleak, funny and deliberately peculiar world to the Strode stage.

At the centre of the play are Vladimir and Estragon, two wandering tramps waiting beside a lonely tree for the mysterious Mr Godot, in the hope that his arrival might somehow change their lives.

Time, place and memory refuse to behave themselves as expected, and Godot remains an elusive figure while the pair fill the waiting with arguments, jokes, routines and increasingly existential questions.

Dave Palmer plays Vladimir, with John Howden as Estragon, forming the odd-couple double act at the heart of the play.

They are joined by Martyn Jessop as Pozzo, an eccentric and deeply pompous traveller, and Phoebe Lynch as Lucky, his downtrodden companion.

The character of Boy will be shared by two young local performers, Zahan and Oren, from a theatre school. Their surnames are not being published for safeguarding reasons.

The production is aiming for something darker and stranger than a straightforward literary classic, with the team describing the feel as similar to a David Lynch film — unsettling and surreal, but also oddly funny.

That is not a bad fit for a play in which two men spend much of their time waiting for somebody who may or may not arrive, while a bizarre pair of strangers wander into their increasingly uncertain world.

Strode's synopsis describes the results as "both funny and tragic", with Beckett's characters trying to find meaning in a place where very little can be relied upon.

Crucially, this is not a visiting production. The show has been created in-house by Strode Theatre, with the performances helping to raise funds for the venue.

Waiting for Godot will run at Strode Theatre, The Studio, from 28 to 31 October 2026.
