Street has seen a significant rise in crime, according to the latest figures released for August 2024.

A total of 109 crimes were recorded in the town during the month, a sharp increase from the 77 incidents reported in July—representing a 41% surge in overall crime.

The data, which includes categories such as anti-social behaviour, burglary, and violent crime, shows troubling increases in several key areas.

Violent crime remains the most frequently reported issue, with 41 incidents recorded in August compared to 30 in July. This category covers a range of offences, including assault and harassment, and continues to be a primary focus for local police efforts.

Burglary has also jumped from two incidents in July to 10 in August, indicating a rise in break-ins and property thefts across the area. Shoplifting, another prevalent issue in Street, saw a marked rise, climbing from seven recorded incidents in July to 12 in August.

A police spokesperson said: "We're working closely with the community to address these issues and are increasing patrols in areas that have been identified as hotspots."

In comparison, neighbouring Glastonbury recorded 123 crimes in August, up from 114 in July—a more modest 7.9% rise. Violent crime and anti-social behaviour were also the top concerns in Glastonbury, with 37 and 19 incidents reported respectively.

While Street's figures show a larger percentage increase, the types of crime differ slightly, with burglary and public order offences standing out as areas of particular concern for the local community. Public order offences in Street rose from 10 in July to 15 in August, while incidents of criminal damage and arson jumped from five to eight.

The only category that saw a decrease was anti-social behaviour, which dropped from 13 incidents in July to 11 in August.

The police are advising residents to take extra precautions, especially with securing their properties and vehicles.

Residents are also reminded that vigilance and reporting suspicious behaviour play a crucial role in helping law enforcement address these issues promptly and effectively.
