With WHSmith set to close its Street branch on 4 January 2025, the future of the town's Post Office remains uncertain, prompting local leaders to explore a range of options to keep the essential service available.

Street Parish Council chairman confirmed that while WHSmith's closure is moving ahead, efforts are underway to secure a new operator for the Post Office.

"There have been two or three applications to open a Post Office at other locations," he said. "If these fall through, which is unlikely, we may need to consider a community-run Post Office model," said Councillor Bryan Knickerbocker.

The closure of WHSmith has raised concerns among businesses and residents who rely on the Post Office for services such as banking, with fears that losing this vital facility could have a knock-on effect for the high street.

The Post Office has confirmed that the search for a new operator is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the West End Post Office will remain open, offering some relief to residents. However, many in the community are hoping a solution is found to retain a high street presence before WHSmith's closure in January.

A spokesperson from the Street and Glastonbury Chamber of Trade and Commerce emphasised the importance of finding a sustainable solution. "Street is home to over 300 businesses, 14,000 residents, and attracts millions of visitors each year, so it's crucial we maintain these services."
