Street Parish Council has passed a resolution supporting and promoting the use of cash, aiming to ensure all residents have the freedom to choose their preferred payment method.

At its meeting on 21 January 2025, councillors voted in favour of the motion, which was put forward by Councillors Smith, Swift, and Wolfers. The decision comes amid concerns that the shift to digital transactions is making it harder for some residents, particularly older people and those without access to online banking, to manage their finances.

The council's resolution highlights the importance of cash for accessibility, economic inclusivity, and financial independence within the community. While digital payments continue to grow, councillors believe cash remains a vital option that must be preserved.

Street Parish Council chair, Councillor Bryan Knickerbocker, said: "The ability to use cash remains an essential part of everyday life for many of our residents. By supporting this motion, we are highlighting the importance of ensuring that everyone has the freedom to choose their preferred payment method, including cash. We will work with local businesses, residents, and policymakers to champion and support maintaining cash as a viable option."

As part of its commitment, the council will take several steps to encourage cash accessibility, including raising awareness through newsletters and social media, writing to MPs and banks to advocate for policies that maintain cash acceptance, and encouraging local businesses to continue taking cash payments. It also plans to host public discussions to understand residents' concerns.

However, while the council can promote and advocate for cash usage, it does not have the legal power to require businesses to accept cash payments. Any actions taken will remain within the existing legal framework.

Residents and local businesses are encouraged to share their views with the council or take part in upcoming community discussions on the issue.
