Street Market’s future in the spotlight as retailers head to council
By Laura Linham 16th Oct 2026
The future of Street's Thursday market will come before parish councillors next week, after residents were asked whether it should continue in it's current form.
Local retailers are planning to attend the meeting at Crispin Community Centre on Tuesday, 20 October.
Street Parish Council said the market cost it £15,078 to run in the last financial year. Its consultation asked residents whether they wanted the market to continue and invited them to explain their answer, with responses closing on Thursday, 15 October.
Tuesday's agenda includes a review of the market service and refers to a confidential report. It does not establish that a final decision on the market's future will be made that evening.
The review comes around 18 months after the parish council took over the weekly market from Somerset Council on 1 April 2025. Announcing the transfer, the parish council linked the market to its priority of improving the High Street and said it looked forward to supporting its continued weekly provision.
The consultation has now given residents an opportunity to put their views to councillors ahead of the review. Tuesday's meeting takes place at Crispin Community Centre on Leigh Road, with proceedings beginning at 7pm.
