Glastonbury Abbey announces Monday closures over winter
By Laura Linham 15th Oct 2026
Glastonbury Abbey will close to visitors and members every Monday from 2 November until 15 February 2027.
The temporary closures will allow staff and contractors to carry out essential conservation, maintenance and grounds work.
The charity says rising costs and its long-term financial sustainability also informed the decision. Conservation and maintenance are estimated to require £750,000 over the next five years.
Closing during the quieter winter period will provide protected working time. Some tasks involve vehicles, machinery or specialist equipment and can be completed more safely without visitors on site.
The abbey will remain open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 4pm, with last admission at 3.15pm. Normal Monday opening will resume on 22 February 2027.
