Street honours local heroes at community awards
By Laura Linham 8th Jun 2026
Street's quiet grafters, lifesavers and community champions have been honoured at the village's annual Community Awards and Investiture Ceremony.
Street Parish Council hosted the event at Strode Theatre on Tuesday, 2 June 2026, bringing together residents, local groups, organisations and guests to celebrate people whose service has made a lasting difference.
The Citizen of the Year Award was presented posthumously to Peter Fry, in recognition of what the council described as his exceptional and lifelong service to Street.
Peter was remembered as kind, thoughtful and quietly dependable.
He gave countless hours to local groups including Street Allotments Association, Street Twinning Association, Friends of Street Library, and both the Street and Glastonbury Repair Cafés.
The Young Citizen of the Year Award went to Nico Attwell.
At 23, Nico works as an Emergency Medical Despatcher with the South Western Ambulance Service, supporting people at some of the toughest moments of their lives.
He was recognised for his fundraising after the deaths of three ambulance colleagues, completing a 35-mile walk from his home in Street to Bristol Emergency Operations Centre in Bradley Stoke.
The walk raised thousands of pounds for The Ambulance Staff Charity.
The Community Award was presented to Mental Health in Combat Sports CIC and its founder, Leon Tozer.
The organisation was set up to support people facing mental health challenges and has grown from a small community initiative into a local resource offering counselling, mentoring and structured activities.
Its work supports children, young people, adults and vulnerable residents.
The evening also saw Cllr Peter Goater formally invested as Chair of Street Parish Council for the 2026–27 civic year.
Cllr Heidi Dalgarno was appointed Vice Chair.
Robbie Drewett DL, HM Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, attended the ceremony alongside councillors, community representatives, family members and residents.
Cllr Goater said: "It was a privilege to recognise three truly deserving recipients whose dedication, compassion and service have made a real difference to the lives of others.
"Whether through voluntary service, supporting people in times of crisis, or providing vital mental health support within our community, each of our award winners represents the very best of Street.
"Their contributions remind us of the strength, kindness and community spirit that make our village such a wonderful place."
Guests also heard performances from local musicians and students, including pianist Lynette So, singer Joe Dolman, pupils from Crispin School, and Strode College band Paperplanes.
Street Parish Council congratulated all award recipients and thanked those who attended and contributed to the celebration.
