In a move set to redefine the residential landscape of Somerset, Mendip District Council's latest proposals have earmarked over 270 new homes for Street and Glastonbury, as part of a wider scheme aiming to deliver more than 750 homes across the district by 2029.
The initiative forms part of the council's Local Plan Part II, endorsed by councillors in late 2021, aiming to meet the growing housing demand within the region.
A Closer Look at the Planned Developments
Street's Future Growth Area: Marked for development is land west of Brooks Road, within what's dubbed the 'future growth area' of Street, poised to accommodate 120 homes. Though yet to be formalised through planning submissions, optimism is high that this development could commence within the next couple of years, potentially changing the face of Street and its housing landscape significantly.
Glastonbury's Housing Horizon: Glastonbury is not far behind, with 90 homes planned for Lowerside Lane, an area also known as Common Moor Drove. This site, which already has outline planning permission following an appeal, promises to bolster Glastonbury's housing stock, though development hinges on necessary upgrades to the local wastewater treatment plans by Wessex Water, slated for completion by late 2025.
Retirement Living in Street: Further enriching Street's housing variety, Churchill Retirement Ltd. proposes transforming the largely vacant Crispin Centre into a haven for retirees, featuring 45 flats and 11 cottages. This development meets the housing needs and enriches the community fabric by providing accessible living options within the heart of Street.
Affordable Housing in Glastonbury: Echoing Mendip District Council's commitment to affordable housing, the Norbins Road car park in Glastonbury is set to deliver six homes as part of a partnership with Aster Housing, marking a step forward in addressing the affordable housing crisis and ensuring community members have access to quality, affordable living spaces.
A Broader Perspective
The initiative extends beyond Street and Glastonbury, with additional sites across the former Mendip district contributing to the overarching goal of 777 new homes. This includes developments in Midsomer Norton, Coleford, and Wells.
Public Consultation and Next Steps
These proposals are subject to public scrutiny, with a consultation period until April 12. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to share their views, shaping the future of housing in Somerset. Following this, further consultations and reviews will pave the way for the final submissions to the Planning Inspectorate, marking a critical milestone in Somerset's journey towards meeting its housing needs by 2029.
The responses to the consultation will come before the council's planning and transport policy sub-committee on June 20.
A further round of consultation will be carried out over the summer before the final submissions are made to the Planning Inspectorate on September 30.
