High winds and heavy rain are expected to sweep across Somerset as Storm Darragh arrives this weekend.

Somerset is bracing for Storm Darragh, which is forecast to bring severe winds and heavy rain from Friday into the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings for the county, including an amber alert for "danger to life" winds on Saturday.

The amber warning will be in place from 3am to 9pm on Saturday, covering western parts of Somerset, including Taunton, Minehead, Wells, Bridgwater, and Weston-super-Mare. Coastal and exposed areas are expected to bear the brunt, with gusts reaching 70-80mph.

A yellow warning for wind is already active until 3am Friday morning, with another yellow warning in place from Friday afternoon through to Sunday morning. Widespread gusts of 50-60mph are expected, with heavy rain adding to the challenging conditions. Up to 70mm of rain could fall in some areas, potentially leading to localised flooding.

Jason Kelly, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said: "Storm Darragh will bring several hazards, including wind gusts of up to 80mph along western coasts. Inland areas may see gusts of up to 60-70mph. It's important to stay updated as this system evolves."

Drivers are urged to take extra precautions. Dale Hipkiss from National Highways advised: "Prepare in advance and adjust your driving behaviour to stay safe. Check your vehicle before travelling to avoid breakdowns."

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mike Silverstone added: "There's uncertainty about the storm's track, but Friday night and Saturday are set to be very wet and windy. The highest rainfall totals are expected in northern Wales and England, but Somerset is likely to see significant disruption as well."

Residents are advised to secure loose items, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor weather updates throughout the weekend.
