Whether you're hunting down a good burger, dusting off your dancing shoes or wondering if life as a firefighter might be for you, Street and Glastonbury are pulling out all the stops this week.

From food deals to community events – and even a Women's Friendship Group meeting promising tea, raffles and rambling – here's your locally-sourced guide to what's on.

First up in Glastonbury, the fire station is calling on local people to join their ranks. The Fire Station Recruitment Evening takes place on Thursday 5 June, offering a drop-in chance to explore the role of an on-call firefighter. You don't need previous experience – just a decent level of fitness, daytime availability, and the willingness to respond to emergencies mid-laundry cycle. It's a rare chance to climb into a fire engine without setting off any alarms.

If you'd rather swap hoses for hamburgers, head to Street where Burger Night at The Loft is back on Thursday 5 June. From 6pm to 8pm, any burger plus chips, salad and a drink will set you back just £15. Ideal for a fuss-free dinner before a night out – or instead of one.

And if you do fancy a proper night out, The Loft is throwing a Disco Party Night on Saturday 7 June. Expect classic tracks, a full dance floor and zero ticket faff. Just turn up from 9.30pm and let the glitterball do the rest.

In Wells, things are getting smaller – but no less impressive. Starting Saturday 7 June, the Town Hall hosts the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists Exhibition until Saturday 14 June (closed Sunday 8 June). Featuring everything from portraits on teabags to intricate bronze sculptures, this is a must-visit for anyone with an eye for detail. Entry is free and artists will be demonstrating their skills daily.

If you'd like to try your own hand at miniature painting, the society is running a full-day workshop on Saturday 7 June in the Town Hall. For £50, you get expert tuition, tea, coffee, and the satisfaction of painting something smaller than your average coaster.

Also in Wells, budding young Robin Hoods can sign up for the Junior Archery Beginners Course, also starting Saturday 7 June. The course runs across four Saturdays and is open to 8 to 16-year-olds, teaching the skills and safety to become a full Wells City Archer. There are even badges.

Looking ahead to Thursday 12 June, the Glastonbury Women's Friendship Group hosts a talk at 7.30pm in the Town Hall called Making Sure Everything Is Up to Date. It's all about setting things in order as we get older, with a round-up of upcoming events, a raffle and the obligatory cup of tea.

Finally, over in Shepton Mallet, there's a rare chance to peek behind the gates at Pennard House Gardens on Tuesday 10 June, as part of the National Garden Scheme. Entry is £6 from 12pm to 5pm, with proceeds going to NGS charities. The Pennard Plants nursery will also be open 10.30am to 4.30pm for plant sales, with 10% of takings donated. It's a perfect excuse for a wander and maybe just one more potted herb you definitely need.
