A restaurant near Shepton Mallet has come second in SquareMeal's UK Top 100 restaurant list.

Osip in Bruton placed number two in the list, pipped to the number one spot it held last year by Grace and Savour in Hampton-in-Arden.

Osip is a tiny, Michelin-starred restaurant owned and run by ex-head chef of London favourites Portland and Clipstone, Merlin Labron-Johnson.

Serving a refined line-up of farm-to-table food, the 22-cover restaurant works grows much of its own produce and works closely with local suppliers to source the rest for a predominantly vegetarian menu. A variety of tasting menus are on offer - lunch diners can choose between a four-course' menu du jour' or a six-course tasting menu, whilst dinner offers up a full nine-course taster, as well as the six-course.

Osip has taken the decision to make the tasting menus completely blind - you leave yourself in the hands of Labron-Johnson and his expert kitchen team here (though you get a lovely printed menu to take away with you afterwards).

SquareMeal's Head of Content Caroline Hendry explains: "Last year's number one is still high in estimations, and Osip's reputation is only growing. The serene dining room is matched by precise, elegant cooking, and a laudable commitment to supporting local producers."

Using a combination of thousands of reader votes and SquareMeal's own expert critics, the UK Top 100 Restaurants list is a true reflection of Britain's varied dining scene - featuring everything from fine dining experiences through to farm-to-table restaurants and gastropubs. Each eatery is truly unique but all have one thing in common - an unmissable menu.

Ms Hendry continued: "We're sending huge congratulations to all 100 restaurants featured in this year's list."
