End of an era as Shepherd's Bakery announces it will close

It will be the end of an era when a café with its roots dating back 90 years closes on Saturday (January 17.)

Shepherd's Bakery, at the west-end of the High Street, has announced that after 92 years of business in Street they will be closing their doors for the final time this weekend.

A note on the door thanks customers for their support over the generations, and blames the closure on the rising costs of electricity and the cost of raw materials.

Bakers have seen 300% price increases in 2022 meaning the energy cost of running some small bakeries has gone from £1,500 to around £4,500 per month.

Since May 2021, wheat prices have gone up 165% and prices of key ingredients like butter and oil have risen steeply.

The traditional bakery has outlasted 22 prime ministers, and seen the entry of the UK into the EU - and its exit.

It's another blow for Street, who lost Puddy Marks in October after more than 100 years in business, and the West End fish n' Chip shop, which dated back to the 1930s, last month.

The announcement of Shepherd's impending closure has launched an outpouring of sadness on social media, with one resident urging people to 'keep shopping in the independent shops'.

Others thanked the staff and owners of the bakery for all their work and wished them well for the future.
