Somerset police make 62 arrests in drink and drug drive blitz

Somerset police made 62 arrests in the first week of December as part of a new Christmas campaign targeting drink and drug drivers.

The arrests were made by Avon and Somerset Police between Monday, 1 December and Sunday, 8 December 2025 — a 31 per cent rise compared to the same period last year, when 47 people were arrested.

The campaign aims to remove dangerous drivers from the roads before they cause serious harm. Officers have already dealt with 32 fatal collisions this year.

In one operation on the A38 at West Huntspill on Thursday, 4 December, 38 vehicles were stopped for speeding, and 20 drivers were breathalysed — all were under the limit. A further checkpoint in Lower Weare recorded 20 drivers exceeding 35mph. Two drivers clocked over 50mph will face court action.

Inspector Matt Boiles said: "Imagine getting a knock at the door at 3am because someone you love isn't coming home. That's the reality behind drink or drug driving incidents. It's not just statistics, it's shattered families, lifelong injuries and lives changed in seconds."

Police said impairment remains one of the most significant factors in serious or fatal collisions, leading to slower reaction times, poorer judgement and more severe crashes. Even where there is no injury, convictions for driving under the influence can still ruin lives.

Residents are urged to report suspected drug or drink drivers by calling 999, using the police online form or contacting a local station. Anonymous reports can also be made via Crimestoppers.

In one case earlier this year, a man in his 40s was caught driving under the influence of cannabis on the M5 near Bridgwater following a Crimestoppers tip-off. He later pleaded guilty to multiple offences and was banned from driving for four years.
