Somerset: NHS issues half-term health and care advice
By Laura Linham 16th Feb 2026
As the February half-term gets underway, NHS Somerset is urging residents to plan ahead to stay well over the school holidays.
Key advice includes ordering repeat prescriptions early via the NHS App, using community pharmacies for minor illnesses, and downloading the Handiapp for children's healthcare advice.
Bernie Marden, Chief Medical Officer at NHS Somerset, said: "During the February half-term holidays, it's important to know how you can get the help you need. The easiest and quickest way to order your repeat medicine is via the NHS App or GP Online Services.
"Community pharmacies can help with many winter illnesses and provide prescription-only medicine for conditions such as sinusitis, sore throats and earache."
He also highlighted mental health support: "We have face-to-face safe spaces, a 24-hour helpline, and advice via our Open Mental Health website. Help is always at hand."
Community pharmacies and urgent care
Residents are advised to use their local pharmacy for over 40 minor health conditions. The Pharmacy First scheme offers prescription-only treatment for:
- Sinusitis
- Sore throat
- Earache
- Shingles
- Impetigo
- Infected insect bites
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women
For urgent but non-life-threatening issues like fractures, sprains or minor burns, Somerset Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) and Minor Injury Units (MIUs) are available. Residents are encouraged to check opening times online before visiting.
Mental health and family support
Support is also available for those facing mental health struggles, including the 24/7 Mindline Somerset service and Open Mental Health's Festive Wellbeing Kit.
Somerset Council continues to offer cost-of-living support, including:
- Food pantries
- Council Tax and housing payment help
- Support for carers and the elderly
For children, parents are advised to download the Somerset Handiapp for advice on high temperatures, vomiting and other common concerns.
What to do in an emergency
- Call 999 in a life-threatening situation
- Use NHS 111 online or by phone for non-emergency advice
- For urgent dental needs, call 111 for a referral to emergency care
Vaccinations for flu, COVID-19 and RSV are available from GPs, pharmacies and pop-up clinics across Somerset. Visit NHS Somerset ICB for full details.
