Grassroots groups across Somerset are being urged to claim a share of a £500,000 pot to help people stay warm this winter.

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) is offering grants of up to £5,000 through its Community Matters Fund, with applications open now until 5pm on Thursday 24 October.

The money can be used to run warm spaces, upgrade draughty village halls, deliver blankets and draught excluders, visit vulnerable residents, or give advice on switching tariffs and fuel discounts.

Registered charities and not-for-profits are eligible for the full amount. Smaller groups without a charity number can still apply for up to £2,000.

Ellie Patey, NGED's Social Impact Business Partner, said: "We want to support grassroots organisations that are looking to help people stay warm this winter, particularly those facing cost of living pressures.

"We're keen to back projects delivering a legacy of support beyond the initial funding. For example, helping people save money on energy bills on an ongoing sustainable basis."

NGED's wider work includes year-round support schemes like Power Up and Affordable Warmth, targeted help through Kidney Care UK and the Fuel Bank Foundation, and warm space funding via the Warm Welcome campaign. Customers with extra needs can also register for free extra support via the Priority Services Register.
