Series of outdoor events planned at Glastonbury Abbey

Following a safe, successful reopening of Glastonbury Abbey in June and increasing visitor numbers throughout July and early August, the abbey is set to open its doors for outdoor events during the second half of August.

With strict adherence to the government guidelines the abbey is hoping to welcome a significant number of visitors to enjoy outdoor theatre, outdoor cinema, live music and musical theatre in a safe yet still enjoyable environment.

Capacities have been reduced to allow for social distancing and tickets have been limited to pre-sales only to ensure that crowds can be effectively managed from entry to exit.

Following the success of The Sword in the Stone and The Three Musketeers, IKP return with another "bonkers" theatre adventure with a new comedy adaptation of L Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Join Dorothy, the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and Toto as they encounter munchkins, witches, winged monkey, enchanted slippers and a Wonderful Wizard.

Expect the unexpected in this comedy for all the family, featuring physical humour, fast-paced multi-roling and plenty of laughs for all ages

The show takes place on Saturday (August 15) and doors open at 6pm for a performance at 7pm.

The ever popular The Greatest Showman will be screened at Glastonbury Abbey on Saturday August 22 on a large outdoor screen and crystal clear sound system.

The previously advertised "singalong" edition has had to be withdrawn due to government guidelines but the show must go on.

There are only a few tickets left for this cinema experience but there is still time to join the abbey for a retelling of the life of the sensation that was PT Barnum.

Night at the Abbey takes place at the end of the summer every year and the abbey has done all it can to make sure the event can go ahead this year, albeit with a different layout and reduced crowd as per the outdoor event guidelines.

You can still expect the same level of high quality music across three stages and the stunning illumination of the abbey ruins.

National touring acts and local legends will provide the entertainment, featuring Funke and The Two Tone Baby, Flipron, Harry Marshall, Pattern Pusher and many more.

Night at the Abbey is on Friday August 28 and doors open at 5pm. There is a strict 10pm curfew and last entry is at 9pm.

The last – but certainly not least – event at Glastonbury Abbey this summer is One Enchanted Evening on Sunday (August 30), where Somerset's professional theatre and music talent return to the stage in a programme featuring some of the most enchanting numbers from our favourite musicals.

Bringing together superbly talented singers, musicians and dancers to prove that the performing arts are still alive and well in Somerset.

One Enchanted Evening founder and organiser, Andrew Wright, is an award-winning choreographer and director.

He has invited professionals who combine West End experience with Somerset roots and has created a very special evening to thank all the essential workers and volunteers who kept Somerset safe this year.

Arrive from 6.15pm, bring your picnic, chairs and blankets and prepare to be enchanted. This is a fundraising event for local charities that have supported the NHS and people of Somerset through Covid-19 and the lockdown.

Please observe all guidance while on site and be aware that entry and exit may take longer than normal.
