Glastonbury pizza lovers will soon be able to enjoy a slice of Papa John's after plans for a new outlet in the town were approved.

A planning application for the change of use of the ground floor area from currently vacant bookmakers (Sui Generis) to a hot food takeaway (Sui Generis) and associated works at 17 Market Place, Glastonbury, had been submitted to Mendip District Council by Aman Virk on behalf of Papa John's (GB) Ltd.

The company believes the new outlet in the former William Hill bookmakers could provide up to 20 full-time jobs for Glastonbury residents and would compliment existing businesses in the town centre.

The branch will be open from 11am to 11pm every day, including Sundays and bank holidays. Papa John's estimates the premises will receive three deliveries by lorry each week – two from the company's central food supplier, and one from its main drinks partner Coca Cola.

In approving the plans, the Mendip officer said in their report: "The proposal would result in a diverse and robust economy, and enhance the image of the area as a business location, filling an otherwise unoccupied unit.

"Furthermore, the proposal would limit the demand for private transport being located within the centre of Glastonbury with good transport links.

"The proposal would also offer new job opportunities through the opening of a new shop in a currently unoccupied unit."

Planning applications in the Glastonbury area that have been submitted to Mendip District Council this week include:
