New sensory garden set to open in Street’s Merriman Park this summer

The Merriman Park Sensory Garden in Street opens on Sunday, 20 July.

A new sensory garden will open in Street this summer, offering a space for residents to relax and explore the sights, sounds and smells of one of the town's best‑loved green spaces.

The Merriman Park Sensory Garden will be officially unveiled from 1pm on Sunday 20 July — National Ice Cream Day — after months of hard work by the Merriman Park Community Group.

The group has fundraised, planned and organised the garden, with support from local businesses including the staff at Fondo Lounge on the High Street, who sponsored the group throughout 2024.

Visitors are invited to come down, bring a picnic and spend the afternoon enjoying the new space, which has been designed to delight the senses and create a welcoming spot for families and friends to relax.

The garden is part of Street Parish Council's wider vision to develop more green spaces across the area. Under the devolution strategy from Somerset Council, the parish council is seeking ideas from residents on how these spaces can be improved and enhanced.

If you have thoughts or suggestions about Street's parks and green spaces, you can get in touch via street.parish@street‑pc.gov.uk.
