MP demands urgent ministerial visit over floods
By Laura Linham 10th Feb 2026
Glastonbury and Somerton MP Sarah Dyke has called on the Flooding Minister to urgently visit Somerset, warning that communities are still struggling with floodwater and damage.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Ms Dyke said the situation remained critical following intense rainfall, with more wet weather forecast and river catchments already full. She urged the minister to see the damage for herself and meet residents dealing with the aftermath.
"Last week, 50 mm of intense rain fell across large parts of Somerset and exacerbated the already saturated ground, with a major incident declared," Ms Dyke said.
"With high spring tides and more unsettled weather expected, residents have told me they fear a repeat of the devastating 2013–14 floods."
She added that communities need urgent support and resources to prepare extreme weather resilience plans.
Ms Dyke has been calling for a visit from the Minister for several months, and although a meeting had been agreed in principle for later this year, she is now demanding that it happen immediately while floodwaters remain high.
In a statement issued this week, Ms Dyke said: "It is vital that the Minister comes to Somerset now, to see the situation for herself and to hear directly from residents about how flooding is affecting their lives. Only by being on the ground can the Government fully understand the scale of what people here are facing and the support that is needed."
She has also formally written to the Minister and repeated her call during a Westminster Hall debate.
