Millfield Preparatory School has lodged revised plans to floodlight its hockey, tennis and netball courts at Edgarley Hall in Glastonbury, after a previous application was turned down over concerns about local heritage and wildlife.

The new proposal, now with shorter columns, dimmer lighting and reduced hours, aims to address Somerset Council's reasons for refusal in August 2023. Under the revised plan, lights would run only from 7am to 7.15pm during the winter months, with the last 15 minutes dimmed for safe exit.

Documents show the school has trimmed the lighting scheme's footprint to lessen visibility from Glastonbury Tor and nearby homes, and to reduce disruption to protected species including bats. The application is also backed by plans for hedgerow and tree planting to screen the site.

The school says permanent lights would cut down on minibus trips to its Senior School in Street, roughly a 12km round trip, and could open up the courts for limited early evening use by local clubs.

While portable lights could be brought in without permission, Millfield argues a fixed system would be more efficient, safer and easier to control.

The application - 2025/1278/FUL - includes updated ecological, heritage and landscape assessments, along with visual mock-ups from key public viewpoints.
