Mid-Somerset Orchestra Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Romantic Spring Concert
The Mid-Somerset Orchestra is set to mark its 50th anniversary in style with a romantic spring concert at Strode Theatre in Street on Saturday 13th May. The concert features a diverse range of music from England, Germany, and Russia.
The evening will begin with the dramatic Tragic Overture by Brahms, which was composed in 1880. The work is a symphonic masterpiece that exudes turbulence and drama. This will be followed by the tone-poem On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring (1912) by Yorkshire-born composer Frederick Delius. The piece is a seasonal celebration of the arrival of spring.
The first half of the concert concludes with Elgar's Three Bavarian Dances (1887), inspired by the composer's holiday experiences in the Bavarian Alps. The work is a delightful representation of the region's culture and traditions.
In the second half of the concert, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony (1878), which is famous for its dramatic opening "Fate" fanfare. The symphony also features a beautifully melancholic oboe solo in the second movement, a pizzicato scherzo, and the energetic Russian folk tunes of the finale.
The orchestra will be conducted by Hitoshi Suzuki, who is known for his dynamic and engaging performances. The concert is set to begin at 7.30 pm, and tickets are available from the Strode Theatre box office online or by calling 01458 442846.
