A man has died after police were called to an incident at the Morrisons petrol station in Glastonbury on Sunday morning.

Avon and Somerset Police were called just before 7.50 am on Sunday, 20 September, following reports of a man "acting in a violent manner" at the supermarket petrol station off Street Road.

Officers arrived at around 8 am and said they established the incident was a medical episode.

Police said "some restraint" was used for the man's safety and the safety of others before he was placed in the recovery position.

The man then became unconscious and unresponsive, at which point officers began CPR.

South Western Ambulance Service was called at 8.23 am and sent two double-crewed ambulances, an air ambulance, an operations officer and a tactical commander.

The man was flown to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where he later died. His family has been informed.

Because police had contact with the man before his death, the incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has decided to carry out an independent investigation.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "Some restraint was required for the man's own safety and the safety of others and he was placed in the recovery position.

"He then became unconscious and unresponsive, and officers began delivering CPR prior to ambulance arrival.

"The man was taken to hospital in an air ambulance where he sadly later died.

"His family are aware and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Officers continue to make regular contact with them and keep them updated."

Police have also responded to speculation about what happened during the incident.

The force said no Taser was deployed and that footage from several officers' body-worn cameras and CCTV was being reviewed.

A spokesperson added: "We are aware of some inaccurate speculation online regarding the nature of police involvement. We would like to reassure the public that no Taser was deployed and the incident is captured on multiple officers' body worn video and CCTV, which is being reviewed."

South Western Ambulance Service confirmed one patient was taken by air ambulance to Southmead Hospital.

The IOPC investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding police contact with the man before he was taken to hospital.
