Planning Application Submitted for Modular Homes in Glastonbury to Address Homelessness

Julian House, a homeless charity, has recently submitted a planning application to the county council for an innovative housing project in Glastonbury. This initiative, developed in partnership with Somerset Council, aims to address the acute homelessness issue in the area through the construction of temporary modular homes at St. Edmund's Hall car park.

The Urgent Need for Homelessness Solutions

The proposal comes in response to the alarming increase in the number of rough sleepers in the Mendip area, particularly in Glastonbury. The current cost of living crisis has seen the homeless count rise sharply from below 20 to nearly 30, with more cases possibly adding to this number.

Details of the Modular Home Initiative

The planning application details the establishment of four small modular homes, occupying about half of the existing car park space at St. Edmund's Hall. These units are designed as transitional housing to help individuals move from street homelessness to more permanent living arrangements. The project aims to fill the gap left by existing acute support services, which are already operating at full capacity.

Management and Selection Process for Occupants

The modular homes are intended to be 'move-on' or 'step down' accommodations, offering a less intense level of support and targeting stays of six months to two years. Residents will be carefully selected from those already receiving support services, with criteria focusing on local connections, sobriety, and a willingness to engage in work, education, or volunteering.

Planning reference number: 2023/2177/OUT

Community Engagement and Information

Julian House is actively engaging with the community on this project. They have organized a community engagement event at St. Edmund's Hall on 12th December from 1 PM to 5 PM.
