Glastonbury Town Council is on the lookout for residents who want to step into the ceremonial shoes of a Macebearer, assisting the Mayor from May 2024 to May 2025.

This role is steeped in tradition and vital for adding a dash of ceremonial splendour to the town's civic events.

The Macebearers carry the responsibility of bearing the mace, a symbol of the Mayor's authority during official events, ensuring everything proceeds with the appropriate pomp and circumstance.

Beyond the grandeur, Macebearers are tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including helping to maintain order during civic processions, and ensuring that the town's regalia are kept in pristine condition.

They support the Mayor, Mayoress, and/or Mayor's consort, fulfilling duties that are pivotal to the traditions of Glastonbury.

The role demands availability for evening and weekend events, and occasional church services. Each macebearer will receive an honorarium of £20 per event attended. Candidates interested in contributing to their community's heritage are encouraged to discuss the role:

For an informal chat about the role, please contact Cllr Lokabandhu, Deputy Mayor, on [email protected]

Please send a copy of your CV and a covering letter to the Town Clerk via email: [email protected]. Or by hand to the Town Council reception in the Glastonbury Information Centre.

Your covering letter should explain why you feel that you are suitable for the role and detail your connection to Glastonbury.

Ideal candidates should be ready for commitments during evenings and weekends, along with the occasional church service, reflecting the full social calendar of Glastonbury's civic life.

Be sure to apply by 5 pm on Thursday, 25 April 2024. Interviews, if necessary, will be held on Friday, 3 May 2024. All appointed Macebearers must be available to attend the Annual Meeting of the Town Council on Tuesday, 14 May at 7 pm.
