Drivers travelling between Wells and Glastonbury could face a new 40mph limit along approximately 2.5 kilometres of the A39. Somerset Council has opened a consultation on the proposed restriction, saying lower speeds would help reduce the risk and severity of collisions.

The plans cover sections of the main road around Long Drove, south of Coxley. They include 2,230 metres north of the junction towards Wells and 317 metres south along Hartlake Straight towards Glastonbury.

The council says the proposal has been developed in consultation with police to improve safety for all road users. A formal traffic regulation order would be needed to introduce the restriction.

The consultation opened on Wednesday, 28 October, and runs until Tuesday, 17 November. The limit remains a proposal, with no date confirmed for its introduction.

Residents and motorists can inspect the draft order, maps and supporting documents through the council's traffic regulation orders page. The entry is listed as "A39 Glastonbury to Wells Road, Wells".

Written representations or objections should quote reference ET28082026. Anyone objecting must explain their grounds.

Responses can be posted to Somerset Council, Traffic Management, B2 West, County Hall, Taunton, TA1 4DY. Details of the consultation and submission arrangements are included with the published notice.
