Job hunting this time of year has a slightly chaotic energy to it.

One minute you're vaguely browsing, the next you're seriously considering a complete career change because a listing mentioned "training provided" and you took it personally.

This week's selection leans heavily into variety — night shifts for the insomniacs, hands-on roles for the practically minded, and a few desk jobs for those who like their tea breaks uninterrupted. Whether you're actively looking or just keeping an eye out for something better than your current Monday morning, there's plenty here to poke at.

If you're the sort who thrives when everyone else is asleep (or just enjoys avoiding daytime small talk), the Network Supervisor – Nights role in Shepton Mallet is offering around £35,000 a year. It's Monday to Friday, which already puts it ahead of most night work, and sits firmly in the IT world — keeping systems running while the rest of us are arguing with Netflix. The listing leans heavily on "innovation" and "passion," but read between the lines and it's a steady, skilled role for someone who knows their way around networks and doesn't mind a reversed body clock.

Sticking with nights — but turning the volume up a bit — the Maintenance Engineer (Night Shift) role over in Wells is the heavy hitter this week, with a salary nudging £57,000 plus bonuses. It's a 4-on, 4-off pattern (translation: intense but with decent downtime), working in food manufacturing on proper industrial kit. If you've got electrical and mechanical experience and don't mind the hum of machinery at 3am, this is one of those jobs that pays well because not everyone fancies it.

For those who prefer their wheels big and their work straightforward, there are a couple of driving roles doing the rounds. The HGV 2 Multi Drop Driver in Shepton Mallet is paying £16 an hour, Monday to Friday, with immediate starts—ideal if you want to get going quickly without months of back-and-forth. It's palletised deliveries, so expect early starts, a fair bit of lifting, and becoming very familiar with industrial estates.

Alternatively, if you fancy doing your bit for the environment (and earning more while you're at it), the HGV 2 Recycling Driver/Loader role in Evercreech is offering £20 an hour on a temp-to-perm basis. It's household collections, so a mix of driving and physical graft, but a solid option if you like being out and about rather than stuck behind a desk wondering what day it is.

Now, something a bit more… ecclesiastical. The Governance Officer role at Wells Cathedral is part-time (24 hours a week) and comes in at £24,000 pro rata, with a surprisingly generous 6.8 weeks of holiday. It's all about keeping the behind-the-scenes machinery of the Cathedral ticking — meetings, compliance, paperwork, and making sure nothing falls foul of the Charity Commission. If you're organised, discreet, and don't mind a bit of policy reading with your morning coffee, it's a genuinely interesting role in a very local landmark.

If you like your work varied, people-facing, and just a little bit unpredictable, the Visitor Operations Executive role at Glastonbury Abbey might be worth a look. It's a full-time, permanent position paying £25,350, working five days out of seven—which does include weekends, bank holidays, and the odd evening when events are on (so not one for those wedded to a quiet Sunday). The job itself sits right at the heart of the Abbey's day-to-day running, covering everything from admissions and retail to events and visitor comms.

On the more traditional career ladder side of things, the Private Client Senior Associate role in Wells comes with a salary that can reach £90,000. This is firmly for the already-qualified and experienced — wills, probate, estates, the whole lot—with some leadership responsibilities thrown in. Not one you stumble into, but if you're in that world already, it's a serious opportunity without needing to trek to Bristol every day.

If spreadsheets and forecasting are more your thing, the Management Accountant position in Glastonbury is offering up to £55,000. It's a full-time, on-site role with a mix of reporting, analysis, and business partnering—so not just number crunching in a corner. Ideal if you like being the person who actually understands where the money's going (and gently pointing that out to everyone else).

For something a bit more people-facing, the Visitor Operations Executive at Glastonbury Abbey comes in at £25,350 and sounds like one of those jobs where no two days are the same — which is either exciting or mildly terrifying depending on your personality. It's a mix of admin, events, and customer experience, right in the middle of one of the area's busiest historic sites. Expect weekends, the occasional evening, and a steady stream of visitors asking where the toilets are.

And finally, a quieter but no less important role: the Cook position at Glastonbury Care Home, paying between £13.31 and £14.61 an hour. It's part-time, involves proper home-style cooking, and — crucially — feeding people who will absolutely tell you if the roast potatoes aren't up to scratch. A good option if you've got catering experience and want something meaningful without the chaos of a restaurant kitchen.

There's also a Business Analyst Placement Programme floating about locally, which is less a job and more a paid training route into a new career. Worth a careful read before jumping in — it involves fees — but could suit someone looking for a complete change rather than a quick switch.

That's your lot for this week — whether you're after night shifts, a career pivot, or just something that pays the bills without draining your soul completely.

As ever, there are plenty more roles lurking on the Shepton, Wells and Glastonbury Nub News jobs boards — well worth a scroll when you've got five minutes and a cup of tea going cold.
