Investigation launched after Millfield students electrocuted in serious school incident

Three students at Millfield School in Street were seriously injured after reportedly coming into contact with overhead electrical cables over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Emergency services were called to the independent boarding school at around 7.30pm on Saturday (May 3). Multiple ambulance crews, an air ambulance, a hazardous area response team, fire crews and Avon and Somerset Police all attended the scene.
A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: "We were called at 7.37pm on Saturday, May 3 to an incident at Millfield School. We sent three double-crewed land ambulances, an air ambulance, a hazardous area response team, and a number of additional resources. Three patients were taken to hospital by land ambulance."
The students are now in hospital in a stable condition. Their families have been informed and are with them.
A spokesperson for Millfield confirmed that there is no ongoing risk to others: "The entire Millfield community's thoughts and best wishes are with them all. We ask for everyone to respect their privacy and avoid speculation.
We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how the accident occurred."
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the incident is being referred to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which will lead the investigation. A spokesperson said:
"We were called by the ambulance service at 7.50pm to support emergency services at Millfield School.
Three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries and their next of kin have been informed. A referral has been made to the Health and Safety Executive."
The HSE has confirmed it is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident in partnership with the police.
Further details about the incident have not yet been released.
The school remains open and there is no suggestion of any wider risk to staff or students.
