Happy Landings Animal Sanctuary in Pylle has marked a significant milestone this year, celebrating 40 years of rescuing and rehabilitating abandoned, abused, and neglected animals.

This sanctuary has been a beacon of hope and a symbol of relentless compassion, saving the lives of over 10,000 animals since its inception.

The story of Happy Landings began with a goose named Pimple, who had flown into overhead wires and was left badly injured. Annabelle Walters, the sanctuary’s founder, recalls the humble beginning with profound emotion: "It had flown into some overhead wires and was badly injured. I'd had plenty of experience with birds before and over the course of a few days, was able to rehabilitate it so it was well enough to fly away." This initial act of kindness set the precedent for the sanctuary's mission.

Over the years, Happy Landings has opened its doors to a diverse range of animals, from chinchillas and horses to dogs, rabbits, and cats. "If it's furry or feathered and in need - and if we have capacity - then we will help. Animals offer great therapy, comfort and companionship to mankind, they deserve our help," Annabelle passionately explained.

In this landmark year, the sanctuary faces a crucial challenge: a fundraising campaign to secure £40,000. This amount is essential for covering the costs of veterinary bills, shelter, heating, food, and specialist care for the animals. "Our biggest obstacle has always been financial stability. If it wasn't for the generosity of people who feel like I do, we'd never have lasted 40 years. Like other small local charities, we struggle to continually raise enough to feel safe - it would be incredible to achieve that," Annabelle said.

The sanctuary relies solely on the kindness and support of the public. This year, they are seeking one-off donations, volunteers for fundraising events, and corporate partnerships. These contributions will enable Happy Landings to continue its vital work in rescuing and caring for animals in desperate need.

Imagine the warmth of a safe shelter for a shivering stray dog, the healing touch of veterinary care for an abused horse, or the comfort of a meal for a starving rabbit. Every donation, no matter the size, can bring these life-saving moments to reality. Without the sanctuary, these animals would face unimaginable suffering.

For those who wish to contribute to Happy Landings Animal Sanctuary, donations can be made at happy-landings.org.uk/donate. Individuals and businesses interested in hosting a fundraiser or forming a corporate partnership can email [email protected].

As Happy Landings celebrates its 40th year, let's come together to ensure this sanctuary continues to be a haven for animals in need. Your support can make all the difference in the world to these vulnerable creatures.
