A bell that once summoned people to hear announcements in America will now ring out in Glastonbury after two supporters bought and restored it for the town's crier.

Dating from 1820, the handbell was previously used by a town crier in Maryland. Jeff Kellison found and restored it, including repairing the connection to its handle, while Gabriel Avalon paid for its purchase.

The mayor accepted the gift on behalf of Glastonbury before handing it to town crier Brad Crowley and inviting him to give it its inaugural ring. Brad followed with a proclamation marking the bell's arrival and its future use by those who succeed him.

Addressing the town council, Jeff said: "…what makes an object like this so special isn't just its age or craftsmanship, it's its voice. For over 200 years, its chime has rung out to gather people together, mark moments of importance and celebrate shared community."

The bell was made just 44 years after the American Declaration of Independence. Handbells were used by criers to gather crowds for news, official proclamations, local laws and announcements about markets and events.

Its donation is part of a wider effort by Jeff and Gabriel to provide Brad with traditional clothing and accessories. Jeff has already arranged for buckled shoes to be handmade, while Gabriel found and supplied a staff.

"I have a great deal of respect for anyone who works in historical re-enactments," Jeff said. "Brad is an example. He takes the role of town crier very seriously."

Jeff also praised Brad's willingness to attend shop openings and help people across the community. The pair plan to arrange a set of traditional knee-length breeches over Christmas.

Gabriel, who knew Brad before he became town crier, said: "Jeff and I both believe that Brad is without doubt one of the best criers in the country and that Glastonbury should be put firmly on the map as a centre of excellence."

Their longer-term ambition is for Brad to join a town criers' guild and take part in events elsewhere. They also hope Glastonbury will eventually host gatherings welcoming other criers to the town.
