Glastonbury protest to call for end to fuel poverty

A protest calling for urgent action on fuel poverty will take place in Glastonbury tomorrow (Monday, April 1).
Unite the Union will bring its Energy 4 All campaign to Market Place between 11am and 1pm as part of a national day of action, timed to coincide with the latest energy price cap rise. The increase, which comes into effect the same day, sees the average dual-fuel household bill rise by 6.4 per cent – from £1,738 to £1,849 a year.
Campaigners are calling for national control of energy resources and an end to what they describe as an "unfair and broken" energy system.
The Energy 4 All campaign has been running since 2023 and is holding protests in around 40 locations across the UK. Unite members will be joined in Glastonbury by local fuel poverty and pensioner groups to raise awareness of rising costs and the impact on vulnerable households.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "It's time to end the chaos in our energy network, which allows profiteers to flourish while workers and communities are left in the cold.
"No one should ever have to choose between heating and eating. We believe it is time for public ownership and for fuel poverty to be consigned to the dustbin of history."
Simon Coop, Unite's national officer for energy and utilities, added: "Unite is unique as a trade union in organising in the workplace and the community. Our industrial members in the energy sector are right behind Unite Community's day of action.
"OFGEM have failed to protect consumers. For too long they have sided with the profiteering energy companies over the most vulnerable in our country and we stand in full support of the campaign against fuel poverty and for public ownership of our energy sector."
Unite is also campaigning to defend the Winter Fuel Allowance, calling on the Labour government to reinstate the full payment and introduce a wealth tax to fund it.
