Glastonbury planning roundup: 24 homes, new takeaway and museum
Here are the biggest local planning stories from the past weeks in Glastonbury.
House Estate Rejected
A proposal to build up to 24 new homes on farmland at Pear Tree Farm, on the eastern edge of Glastonbury, has been refused by Somerset Council.
The application, which sought outline planning permission for the development, including access details, was rejected on Monday, 13 January 2025.
The decision marks the end of a proposal that aimed to transform 1.07 hectares of agricultural land along Old Wells Road into a residential estate.
New Takeaway
A planning application has been submitted to convert Unit 1 at the Bayliss Centre in Street from a retail shop into a takeaway and restaurant.
The unit, currently occupied by 7 System Computers, could become a Fireaway pizza restaurant and takeaway if the plans are approved.
The proposal, submitted by Mrs Gopi Patel of V16designz Ltd, seeks permission for a change of use from retail to a food and drink establishment.
Museum Progress
A new museum celebrating Street's iconic shoemaking heritage is set to open by 2025, with plans well underway to transform The Grange, a Grade II listed building, into a major visitor attraction.
The Shoemakers Museum will tell the story of C & J Clark, the globally renowned shoe company founded in the village, and its influence on the local area. The project became possible after the Alfred Gillett Trust acquired the heritage collections of C & J Clark in 2021, ensuring the historic items were preserved for public display.
