The Glastonbury community has been left outraged and heartbroken after a burglary at the home of Wilf Peddle, affectionately known as the 'Egg Man.'

The break-in occurred after Wilf's peaceful passing at Southlawns Care Home in Street on Sunday, 9 June 2024, aged 73 years.

One of Wilf's relatives discovered the break-in, telling blog Normal for Glastonbury that Wilf's home had been completely trashed, with several possessions presumed stolen.

In a message to blogger Vicki Steward, the relative said: "What an awful end to the story. After all the beautiful messages of respect from the people of Glastonbury, for a man who lived such a simple quiet life. A couple of people have ruined it all."

Wilf Peddle was a beloved figure in Glastonbury, known for his dedication to delivering fresh, free-range eggs from his own hens to cafes and residents around town. He was a familiar sight in his immaculate 1964 Morris Minor van, which he had maintained in pristine condition since purchasing it in 1972.

Born and raised in Glastonbury, Wilf attended St John's School and spent his entire life in the town, adapting to its many changes over the decades. In addition to his egg delivery business, he was also dedicated to raising 17 Hereford cattle for beef. Known for his simplicity, Wilf shunned modern technology and preferred to keep things traditional, including meticulously recording his customers' orders in a notebook stowed in a leather satchel.

His warmth and friendliness were a hallmark of his character, making him a beloved figure in the community. and his passing prompted an outpouring of grief.

Avon and Somerset Police are investigating the incident. A spokesperson said, "We are deeply saddened by the news of this burglary, particularly given the recent passing of Mr. Peddle. We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and assist with our enquiries to bring those responsible to justice."
