Glastonbury's Neighbourhood Plan is moving towards a public referendum after consultation on the draft document closed earlier this month. Glastonbury Town Council says it and the local planning authority are aiming, if possible, to hold the referendum alongside elections in May 2027.

The draft plan covers the period to 2040 and contains 18 policies across five themes: environment and green spaces, sustainability and climate, heritage and character, employment and the economy, and housing.

The consultation on the draft closed on 5 August. The next stages include consideration of consultation responses, submission of the plan to the local planning authority and independent examination before a referendum can take place.

If the plan reaches referendum, residents in the designated neighbourhood area will be asked whether they support its adoption. A neighbourhood plan that receives majority support at referendum can become part of the statutory development plan used in deciding planning applications.

Glastonbury Town Council says the plan is intended to guide future development in the town and set out local planning policies for the period to 2040.

The council has not confirmed a referendum date. Its current information says it is working with the planning authority with the aim of aligning the vote with elections in May 2027.
